Company History For three generations, the Covingtons have been a fixture in the automobile business in Montgomery County. Founded in 1929 by Jack Covington, Covington Motor Company opened as a Pontiac dealership in Rockville, Maryland. This original venture suffered some difficult times due to the depression of 1929 and the adverse economy that followed. Undaunted, Jack moved his dealership operation after the depression to Bethesda on Wisconsin Avenue, the site of the present Air Rights Building, and opened the doors of his new dealership as a Buick store. This time, he asked his younger brother Royston, to join him as a partner. Royston left his job as the works manager of the piston ring division of the Koppers Co. in Baltimore to manage the service operation of his brother's dealership. Royston brought with him a keen understanding of automotive mechanics, and a passion for quality customer service which soon would distinguish Covington Motor Company as a leader in customer service. Royston proved to be an astute businessman who loved the automobile business, and soon bought his brother's interest in the dealership. He operated this business until the beginning of World War II. After the war, Covington Motor Company reopened its doors as a Packard agency. Packard was the premier automobile of the time, serving as the vehicle choice, for ambassadors and presidents. Royston's son, Art and his new wife, Norma, both of whom had just returned from the war, joined Royston in this new business venture. Art had been a B-17 pilot during World War II and was shot down over Nazi-occupied France. He was rescued by the French Underground and escaped back to England. In 1961, Covington reacquired the Buick franchise and moved the dealership operation to Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, where it was located until 1987. In 1976, Art Covington became ill, and his son Barry, left his law practice to join Art at Covington Buick. Two years later, at the age of 28, Barry became the youngest GM dealer in the United States. In 1987, Covington Buick moved to its new location at the Montgomery Auto Sales Park in Silver Spring and later acquired the Pontiac and GMC Truck franchises. Covington Buick Pontiac GMC Truck has been honored with many civic and professional awards. Covington is the only Buick dealer in the Washington Metropolitan area to receive Buick's highest award - Best In Class. In 1988, Barry Covington was recognized by Time Magazine as a finalist for its Time Quality Dealer of the Year award. The recipients are chosen by a panel of judges from the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration for their dealership performance and distinguished community service. In addition, Covington has received Pontiac and GMC Truck's highest recognition as a "Master Dealer" for its customer satisfaction rating and sound business practices. Covington Buick Pontiac GMC Truck, Inc. is a family
tradition where customer satisfaction and community service have been
a way of life for three generations. |
